Frequently Asked Questions
What is an endoscopy and is it painful?
An endoscopy (OGD) is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through your mouth to examine the stomach and upper intestine. It is performed under mild sedation, so most patients feel little to no discomfort. The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes.
How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?
You will need to follow a clear liquid diet the day before and take a bowel preparation solution to clear the colon. Avoid solid foods for at least 24 hours before the procedure. Dr. Tipu’s team will provide detailed preparation instructions at the time of booking.
What are the signs of liver disease I should watch for?
Common early signs include persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), dark urine, and upper right abdominal discomfort. If you experience any of these, early evaluation is important.
Can fatty liver be reversed?
Yes, in its early stages, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is reversible through weight loss, dietary changes, regular exercise, and treating underlying conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol.
How is hepatitis C treated today?
Modern direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) can cure hepatitis C in over 95% of patients with a simple 8–12 week course of oral medication. Early detection and treatment prevents cirrhosis and liver cancer.
What is IBS and how is it managed?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gut disorder causing abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. Management includes dietary changes (low-FODMAP diet), stress reduction, and medication tailored to predominant symptoms.
When should I get a colonoscopy screening?
Routine colorectal cancer screening via colonoscopy is recommended from age 45 for average-risk individuals. Those with a family history of colon cancer or polyps should begin earlier. Symptomatic patients should be evaluated at any age.
What does a gastroenterology consultation involve?
Your first visit includes a detailed medical history review, physical examination, and assessment of your symptoms. Based on findings, Dr. Tipu may recommend blood tests, imaging, or endoscopic procedures. You will receive a clear diagnosis and management plan.
